| Impact, special achievements & commitments | | | Tanlay distributes the products of Olivado EPZ, Kenya, within Europe. Since Olivado began producing organic and fair trade extra virgin avocado oil in Kenya in 2008, they have gone to great lengths to act as a socially responsible and fair company. Olivado buys avocados from more than 3,000 small farmers, all of whom have a contract to supply organic and fair trade. Olivado supports these small farmers with training in organic and fair trade practices, as well as crop management. 53 % of the contracted farmers are women, and the participation of women is actively encouraged by Olivado. Since Olivado contracts such a large number of farmers whose farms are scattered across a very large region, establishment of community projects isn't realistic. Farmers are therefore directly paid the premium as additional income, and receive advance payments pre-season to cover school fees and other expenses. Unlike most fair trade programmes, the premium is paid to farmers irrespective of whether or not the end consumer pays the company a fair trade premium. Many farmers have bought livestock or built houses and wells with the premium money they have received. |
